Carrying Out A Survey Of Water Use

This is the most painstaking part of the project which needs good attention to detail. It is simpler to deal with the central heating as one item.

Step 1.

List every room in the house which has items that use water

Don't forget garages, outbuildings, lofts, garden, etc

Step 2.

For each room list all the water devices

Taps, toilets, tanks, pumps, washing machines, radiators, etc

Step 3.

For each appliance list:

a. Whether it leaks or drips?
b. How much water does it use
c. Is the item low, medium or high usage?
d. In the case of baths and sinks - is there a working plug?

Step 4.

For each item decide what opportunities there are to reduce water use

Fixing leaks and drips, fitting pressure reduction valves, plugs work properly, aerating taps and shower heads, etc

Step 5.

Compile the whole lot into a chart for review

For an example survey have a look at the 2005 Survey Results.

For an example record sheet you can print out have a look at the Checklist Index
