Example Water Cost Savings

Toilet Cistern

Reduce toilet cistern capacity from 10.5 to 9.3 litres. Assuming used 5 times a day on average gives a saving of £2.68 every 6 months for no cost to implement

Dripping Tap

Repairing a leaking tap with a measured loss of 6 litres per day saves £1.90 every 6 months for the cost of a new tap washer at 38p.

Rainwater Storage

Installing a 250 litre barrel complete with down pipe trap and piping costs £33. Assuming the barrel is emptied around 4 times a year means that although there is a water cost saving of around £8 a year the payback time is in excess of 4 years.

Turning Off The Tap While Cleaning Your Teeth

Assuming there are 2 people in the house who clean their teeth twice a day this will save around 20 litres a day giving a cost saving of £6.36 every 6 months.

Don't Leave The Hosepipe Running When Not In Use

A hosepipe uses around 15 litres a minute so leaving one running unused an average of 5 minutes each week wastes around £3.20 every 6 months.

The figures for these examples were calculated using EnCalcL , a water saving calculator. Examples assume: Water Volume Cost of 70.00 pence per cubic metre, Sewerage Volume Cost of 115.48 pence per cubic metre and a Sewerage Volume Allowance of 10.0 percent. To find out if the savings predicted are actually being achieved try using EnCalcLU a calculator for checking and predicting water bills. Both of these easy to use programs can be downloaded from JSutils and are free for personal non commercial use.
