Toilet Cisterns

Somewhere around 30% of water usage occurs from flushing the toilet so this is obviously an area to give careful consideration to. Modern toilets use a dual flush mechanism using between 4 to 6 litres of water. Unfortunately most of us are blessed with cistern capacities of 10 litres or in the case of really old units 13 litres. The obvious course of action is to replace the cistern mechanism but this costs money. There are however several thing that can be done for free to save water:

1. As the washer in the cistern wears the water level gradually increases causing the capacity to increase above the figures quoted above. Adjust the level to around 20mm below the normal setting, this will save around 1 litre per flush possibly a lot more if the level is very high and I doubt if anyone will notice any difference.

2. An alternative to the point above is to add something to the cistern to displace water. These are known as lavatory hippos and some water companies provide them for free. These typically reduce the water used by between 1 and 2 litres.
