| Central Heating Pipes |
|
Insulate central heating and hot water pipes in the loft properly |
| |
This is a relatively simple task which need not cost large sums of money. Don't forget to insulate valves but make sure they are easily accessible.
|
| Holes |
|
Make there are no holes from the rooms below into the loft |
| |
Especially around any cables and pipes. Don't block holes or gaps which allow the loft to breathe, this will cause condensation.
|
| Loft Trapdoor |
|
Ensure the trap door fits properly and is sealed against draughts |
| |
Fit sealing strips around the trap door edges. Insulate the reverse side of the trap door.
|
| Insulation |
|
Make sure the loft has at least 350mm of insulation (or
the equivalent) |
| |
Loft insulation is very easy to fit and is not that expensive. Don't forget to insulate under boarded areas and insulate the loft trapdoor which is often forgotten. Keep insulation away from all hot light fittings and hot chimneys. Make sure there are no un insulated pipes in the loft above the insulation as extra insulation will make the loft colder in winter.

| Windows |
|
Don't leave windows or skylights open unnecessarily |
| |
How often have you left a loft skylight open?
|
| |
Reduce draughts |
| |
Fit sealing strips to windows edges that don't fit properly. |
| |
Make sure outer frame of window is sealed both inside and out |
| |
Make sure window frame is sealed both inside and out |
| |
Check beneath window sill for gaps that need sealing both inside and out
|
| |
Fit double glazed windows |
| |
The expenses can be well worth it but it will have a long pay back time. Alternatively fit secondary double glazing. |
| |
Fit thick curtains to windows and skylights |
| |
To help minimise heat loss |
