Hot Water Cylinder   Make sure the immersion heater thermostat is set as low as possible consistent with reasonable hot water
The higher this is set the more electricity will be used.
Don't Use the immersion heater when the central heating is running
If the central heating also heats the water this is just wasting electricity if the water in the tank is cold.
  Adjust the time switch correctly
If one is fitted adjust the time switch so that the water is hot when needed rather than being on for most of the day
Make sure the immersion heater thermostat is working
The easiest way to do this is check the hot water temperature is not much hotter than set i.e. within around 5 degrees Centigrade. It's surprising how many have failed and not been noticed.
Fit a time switch to systems without one
This will enable the immersion heater to be only on when needed
