House 1 - Review Of The 2008 Heat Survey Results

A number of points come across very clearly from this survey.

1. Although a lot has been done over the last year or so there is still scope for further improvement.

2. The increase in loft insulation has made a big difference to the perceived temperature of rooms and has been the biggest contributor to cost savings which are starting to appear over the last year (oil consumption figures since September not yet published).

3. Most of the hot water and central heating pipes in the loft are now lagged but there are still some which need improvements.

4. Reflective foil behind radiators on outside walls works well (lower outside wall temperature using an infra red thermometer).

5. Radiators on outside walls with small shelves above the radiator reduce the outside wall temperature indicating reduced heat loss through the wall.

6. Fitting sealing strips to the front door made a big difference to the hall temperature.

7. A properly balanced central heating system warms up quicker and the house temperature in more uniform over the whole area.

8. The next priority is to improve the insulation for bedrooms 4 and 5 (the least used).

9. Investigate ways to use wasted heat from wood burning fire and central heating boiler..
