Carrying Out A Survey Of Heat Use

This is the most painstaking part of the project which needs good attention to detail.

Step 1.

List every room in the house which has heating items

Don't forget garages, outbuildings, lofts,etc

Step 2.

For each room list all the sources of heat loss

Walls, ceilings, doors, windows, floors, etc

Step 3.

For each item decide whether it is appropriately insulated and draught proofed

What draughts are there, where are they coming from, does insulation exist, is it thick/effective enough?

Step 4.

For each room list all the sources of heat

Radiators, boilers, pipes, chimneys, etc.

Step 5.

For each item decide whether it is appropriately insulated, properly set up and operating effectively

Is heat being lost by poorly insulated pipes, are thermostats set correctly, is heating system properly balanced, is there air in radiators?

Step 6.

Compile the whole lot into a chart for review

For an example survey have a look at the 2008 Survey Results and 2006 Survey Results

For an example record sheet you can print out have a look at the Checklist Index
