Saving Electricity

Radios and Hi-Fi

How many times have you left the room for long periods leaving the radio or the Hi Fi switched on. Most of us have more than one radio and having them all on at once for long periods with no one in the room can waste a lot of electricity and money.

Radio and Hi Fi Tips To Save Electricity

  • Turn radios and Hi Fi off at the wall rather than leaving them on standby
  • Turn off radios and Hi Fi when you leave the room for more than a few minutes
  • Turn the volume down as far as possible consistent with comfortable listening
  • Replace clock radios with a simple battery powered alarm clock

Most people will probably have at least one Hi Fi, radio, etc. If you leave them all on permanent standby then you are wasting a lot of power as I found out when I measured the standby consumption of all our radios and Hi Fi. You can see some of the staggering results I obtained if you have a look at the 2004 and 2006 Survey results. Simply switching off at the wall can save a lot of money. The highlight was a Hi Fi only a few years old by a well known manufacturer which had a standby power of nearly 20W. The newer appliances tend to have much lower standby consumption but they still use electricity on standby.

In particular be aware of old fashioned LED clock radios and the older digital radios which can use a lot of power on standby. For some examples check out the appliance example cost page..
